Some safe, non-habit-forming homeopathic medicines for sleep
Cocculus is for jet lag and shift workers, when you need to reset your body clock. Try taking a dose before take-off and on landing, or before and after work, and again as needed whenever you feel sleepy when you’re meant to be up or vice versa.
Coffea is for “tired and wired” kids, for anyone who can’t get to sleep because they’re so excited about what will happen the next day (Christmas, or getting married, or a big vacation), and anyone else lying in bed amped up (as if too much caffeine) with thoughts whirling around in their head.
Ignatia is called “the rehearsal remedy”: it’s for people who are upset about an emotional situation, who lie awake ruminating over a relationship issue, thinking of what they wish they had said or planning what they might do to that rat the next time they see him.
Nux vomica is for people who can’t sleep because they have acid reflux or other indigestion issues and/or who lie awake thinking of their business deals. The stereotype of the Nux vomica person is someone who is ambitious and driven, who uses stimulants (coffee, cigarettes, pharmaceuticals or street drugs, junk food, spicy food) to stay awake to stay head of the competition.
Zincum is the top homeopathic remedy for restless legs! Use this if your symptoms match Zincum in other ways (mental strain, too much mental work; you wake easily from noise or from your legs jerking just as you fall asleep). If your symptoms don’t match Zincum, try supplementing magnesium for calf cramps, and B vitamins including folate for restless leg syndrome.
You may also need some lifestyle modifications. For example, if you use a computer or other electronic device before bed, the blue light from the screen makes your brain think it’s blue sky outside! That tells your body it’s wake-up time, which is why it would be wise to eliminate screen time before bed. If you really can’t avoid it, use blue-light-blocking glasses. These amber-colored glasses, available online, block the blue light that fools the biological clock center in your brain into thinking it’s daytime.
The electromagnetic field (EMF) from your computer, TV, iPad and cell phone, plus the wireless in your house, can also interfere with sleep. Keep the electronic devices out of your bedroom as much as possible and turn off the wireless in your house at night. Zapped by Ann Louise Gittleman has further suggestions for minimizing EMF interference.5 For convincing research on the dangers of EMF effects on brain function as well as on sleep, see Dr. Victoria Dunckley’s Reset Your Child’s Brain: A Four-Week Plan to End Meltdowns, Raise Grades, and Boost Social Skills by Reversing the Effects of Electronic Screen-Time.6
There are as many different natural remedies for sleep as there are reasons why you can’t sleep. If none if these methods work, you are bound to find an answer in Dr. Case Adams’s Natural Sleep Solutions, the best and most comprehensive book we’ve found on the topic.
